Where Does Argan Oil Come From?
Argan oil comes from the kernel of the Argan tree, sideroxylon spinosum (Argania spinosa). The Argan tree is native to Morocco, Algeria, Western Sahara, and Mauritania, primarily growing in biomes of deserts and shrublands. This tree grows short with a widespread canopy. The wide canopy shades the trunk, while the oval-shaped leathery leaves prevent water loss. Argan trees are a vital part of socio-economics where they grow. The entire tree has a purpose and use.
Producing argan oil requires the kernel of the fruit from the argan tree.
The fruit is dried in the sun and then peeled, leaving behind the kernel. A process of cracking or roasting the kernels comes next, and then the kernels are cold-pressed with a machine, followed by a decanting and filtration process. Argan oil is edible and great for the skin, hair, and nails. There is a slight difference in production for cosmetic and food-grade argan oil. In cosmetic argan oil, the kernels are cracked before pressing. Food grade requires the kernels to roast before being pressed.
